Therapeutic Crisis Intervention - What is it?
Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) is a crisis prevention and intervention system. It originates from Cornell University New York. The TCI system aims to equip organisations and their staff to work together in a way that prevents crisis and that aims to help child, young people, staff and the organisation-as-awhole to recovery at a higher level of function – after a crisis.
Three core competencies underpin TCI:
- Prevent and de-escalate potential crisis situations
- Safely and therapeutically manage a crisis situation
- Be able to process reflectively with children and young people to help them improve coping strategies
